2016 Horizon League Preview

The 2016 Horizon League swimming and diving championship is ready to take place at Oakland University February the 24th to the 27th. Oakland’s men’s and women’s are both the defending Horizon League champions; the men hope to win their 37th consecutive conference title in a row and the women 22nd.
Women’s Meet
Oakland is seeded first in four of the five relays, the 200 medley, 400 medley, 800 free, and 400 free relay; Milwaukee has the top seed in the 200 freestyle relay. The Horizon League swimmer of year from last year, junior Patricia Aschan from Oakland, is ranked first in the 200 IM, the 200 back, and the 400 IM, she also holds the league record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.84. Sophomore Brie Hines from University of Illinois Chicago, is the defending champion in the 500 and is seeded first in the 500, 1000 and second in the 400 IM. Oakland also has four swimmers in the top eight for the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke, including defending conference champion and school record holder, Takara Martin. The Grizzlies also have the top three seeds in the 200 back, with Aschan, Talia Sola-Galindo, and Hannah Burgess.

Men’s Meet
Philipp Sikatzki is ranked first in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly and second in the 100 back. Freshman from Oakland University, Devon Nowicki is ranked first in the 500, 200 breaststroke, and 100 breaststroke. Nowicki holds Oakland’s school record in the 100 breast with the time of 53.11. Cleveland State has the top seed in the 200 medley relay, Milwaukee in the 400 medley relay, and Oakland has the top seed in all the freestyle relays, last year Oakland broke the Horizon League record in the 800 freestyle relay in 6:29.64. Oakland has the first, second and fourth seed in the 500 freestyle, with Nowicki in first, Jake Pearson in second and Mitchell Alters in fourth. Alters won the 200 fly in the 2015 Horizon League Championships. This year Alters is seeded second in the 200 fly to freshman Szymon Golczyk from Cleveland State. Pearson is also seeded in the 1650.
