Chinese Olympian Sun Yang Looking Ahead To Tokyo 2020

Just one month after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games concluded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Chinese Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang has made it known that he has his sights set on Tokyo 2020.

Sun became a household name as an international swimmer in 2012 when he claimed gold medals in the 400 and 1500 free, as well as a World Record in the 1500 free that still stands today. Last month in Rio Sun added a gold medal in the 200 free and a silver medal in the 400 free to his Olympic medal haul, and was unable to defend his gold medal in the 1500 free after missing out on finals.

Talking with New China at an awards ceremony for the Chinese Olympic swimming team in Huangshan, Sun commented that he never stopped training after Rio and is hoping “for a perfect ending at the Tokyo Games.”

While Sun is the most decorated Chinese swimmer in history, controversy surrounds him. In 2014 he served a 3-month doping ban for the drug trimetazidine and was involved in altercations in the warm-up pool while in Rio.
