Chip Peterson Ashley Twichell Win RCP Tiburon Mile

A pair of American open water specialists took home first prize—and the accompanying $2500 prize money—at the annual RCP Tiburon Mile in the San Francisco Bay Sunday. Chip Peterson got the win in the elite division on the men’s side, and Ashley Twitchell finished first among the elite women.

The win is Twitchell’s third straight in this race after previously winning in 2013 and 2015. (The event was not contested in 2014 due to inclimate weather.)

Peterson has been one of the most consistent American open water swimmers in his career, going back to his world title in the 10k in 2005, but this is actually only his second career win in Tiburon after previously finishing first in 2010.

Peterson finished in 25:12, six seconds ahead of Australia’s Michael Sheil. The USA’s Dan O’Connor was the next-best male finisher, but he completed the race three minutes behind the top two.
