Penn’s Chris Swanson came out of nowhere with a final 50 sprint to win Penn’s first NCAA title ever as he captured the men’s 1650-yard freestyle at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.

Swanson unleashed a final 50 of 24.38 to catch South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud down the stretch with a 14:31.54 for the win. Mahmoud finished second in 14:31.66 for a .12-second gap between the winner and second.

Swanson, who won the Ivy League’s first NCAA swimming title since 1990, broke the record for the smallest margin of victory in the 1650.  Martin Grodzki of Georgia (14:24.08) held the previous record with a .27-second win against Chad La Tourette of Stanford (14:24.35) in 2012.
