Christian Scherubl Defends 500 Free Title During Day 2 at American Athletic Conference

SMU’s Christian Scherubl defended his title in the men’s 500 freestyle in Day 2 of the 2016 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus & Wellness Recreation Center Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.

In the closest race of the night, Scherubl (4:18.72) defeated East Carolina’s Michael Dugan by four-hundredths of a second in the 500. The two separated themselves from the rest of the field and battled all the way to the last lap, where it came to a touch-out in favor of Scherubl.

Houston freshman Hannah Herbst made a splash in her first American Championship meet as she won the women’s 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.08 to begin Day 2. Herbst, who turned in the fifth fastest time in the preliminaries, was in first or second place for the duration race on her way to the gold. Tulane freshman Natalie Clausen (4:50.00) finished less than a second behind Herbst while SMU’s Maddie Hoch took third with a time of 4:50.80.
