Distance Star Matthew Hirschberger Verbally Commits to Stanford

Matthew Hirschberger has verbally committed to swim for Stanford University according to tweets from his father.

Hirschberger is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200, 400, and 1500 freestyles.

In yards, he has clocked an 8:45.11 in the 1000. That will make for a valuable dual meet event. As for his potential Pac-12 and NCAA schedules, the rising senior has a best 500 of 4:16.43 and a 14:51.81 in the 1650. That swim was done back in December 2014. Hirschberger’s best 200 freestyle is a 1:37.13.

At this year’s Pac-12 Championships, he would have finished fifth in the 500 freestyle, behind Stanford swimmers Liam Egan and Danny Thomson. His best 1650 time would have placed him third. Egan won the event this year. The two distance swimmers will have one year to train together once Hirschberger arrives on the Farm in the fall of 2017.
