European Olympic Committees Select Minsk As Host For 2019 European Games

Last weekend (October 21 & 22) the European Olympic Committees (EOC) met and held their 2016 General Assembly while gathered in Minsk, Belarus. While gathered the EOC elected Minsk as host of the second European Games, which will be held in 2019.

Acting EOC President Janez Kocijančič announced,

I am delighted that the General Assembly has voted to bring the European Games to Minsk in 2019. Minsk has excellent sports facilities and their initial proposal is to use as much existing infrastructure as possible to create a Games concept suited to their national sports identity. This has the benefit of making the Games more affordable and sustainable for Belarus.

Minsk has traditionally been a strong host for high-level competitions having previously hosted the UCI Track Cycling World Championships and the EUBC European Boxing Championships (both in 2013), the IIHF World Championships in Ice Hockey (2014), and the ISU European Speed Skating Championships (2016).
