The International Olympic Committee adopted new guidelines stating gender reassignment surgery will not be required to compete at the Olympics.
“To require surgical anatomical changes as a precondition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights,” the IOC said in its document.
The IOC guidelines should apply for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
If a man transitioning to a woman, they must have hormone therapy. Additionally, the person must show that the level of male testosterone in their blood has been under ten nanomoles per liter for over a year.
