Joseph Schooling Edges Michael Phelps in 100 Fly at Longhorn Elite Invite

The first night of action at the Longhorn Elite Invite featured Michael Phelps making his final return to the pool in which he broke his first world record, as well as a showdown between Allison Schmitt and Missy Franklin in the 100 free. Phelps got a tight win in his first event of the evening, but in a potential Olympic final preview, he was touched out by a Longhorn competing in his home pool, Joseph Schooling.

North Baltimore’s Allison Schmitt took down Missy Franklin and Margo Geer to win the first event of the meet. Schmitt, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the 200 free, trailed Geer at the halfway point but used a strong finishing split to pull ahead. Schmitt came in at 54.20, which ranks as the fourth-best time by an American this year, trailing Dana Vollmer (53.59), Katie Ledecky (53.75) and Abbey Weitzeil (53.77).

Franklin, representing Colorado Stars, touched second in 54.56, and Tucson Ford’s Geer settled for third in 54.66.

Rebecca Millard (56.04), Lakeside’s Lauren Pitzer (56.63), Tucson Ford’s Bonnie Brandon (56.79), Tasija Karosas (57.27) and Longhorn’s Lisa Boyce (57.32) also competed in the A-final.
