The 2016 Iowa Boys High School State Championships dove into action today in Marshalltown, Iowa with the boys of Waukee claiming the state title. Waukee posted a final score of 244 to become the new state title winners. Last year’s winner, Iowa City West, slid to second with a score of 210, while Bettendorf moved up from a seventh place ranking to third with 198.5 points.
Dubuque Senior and Bettendorf kicked off finals with a battle for first in the 200 medley relay exchanging first throughout each relay exchange. Despite quicker splits from Bettendorf in the back half of the relay the two finished a slim .10 seconds apart with Dubuque Senior’s relay team of John Colin (22.77), Andrew Breitfelder (26.46), Jacob Hansen (23.70) and Brandon Sindt (21.10) claiming first with a final time of 1:34.03. Bettendorf’s Nathan Spencer (23.94), Ryan Schade (26.02), Caleb Aman (23.11) and Grant Nickles (21.06) stopped the clock at 1:34.13.
Cameron Kelley of Cedar Rapids Washington surged ahead of the competition in the 200 free to post a winning time of 1:39.50. Johnston’s Stjepan Fiolic grabbed third with a time of 1:40.36, while Aidan Keen of Iowa City West finished third with a time of 1:40.71.
