Plans for Tokyo Olympic Aquatics Center in Flux

FINA is pushing the organizers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to stick with their original plan to build a new aquatics facility despite unforeseen high costs.

FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu met with Tokyo governor Yoriko Koike and Japanese Swimming Federation President Tsuyoshi Aoki to discuss the issue. Marculescu argued that constructing a new facility instead of utilizing the existing Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center would benefit the Games as well as potential future international events.

The budget for the new pool has risen 68.3 billion yen, but organizers believe they could cut some 10 billion yen in spending by relocating the swimming events. Also being considered for venue changes are the rowing/canoe sprint and volleyball competitions.

Koike explained that her top priority in the decision-making process remains the athletes.
