Rio Organizers Downplay Mosquito Issues Despite Infested Warm Up Pool

A spokesman for the quickly approaching Olympic Games says that apparent mosquito problem should not be an issue, according to Inside the Games.

At last month’s Maria Lenk Trophy meet, which served as the test event for the Games, the warm down pool was not yet covered. Consequently, the pool was reported to be a mosquito haven. A spokesperson said that the area was fumigated during the test event, and should not be an issue in the future. By the time Olympic competition begins in August, the pool is expected to be covered and air conditioned, to rectify the situation.

While the Harvard Public Health review has gone so far as to say the Rio Olympic Games should be cancelled, Olympic organizers are downplaying the issue. Organizers are trying to reassure athletes and spectators by reminding them that the Games will take place in the winter, when mosquitoes should be less prevalent.
