Santo Condorelli Entered in 100 Butterfly After DQ at Trials

This morning FINA released the entry lists for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Canada’s Santo Condorelli is a surprise entrant in the 100 butterfly.

At Canadian Olympic Trials in March, Condorelli was disqualified in prelims for a non-simultaneous touch. His time then was a 52.32 and he would have returned to finals as the top seed, but it appeared as though his chance for an Olympic berth in that event was gone.

At last month’s Arena Pro Swim Series Indianapolis the 21 year old posted a 51.98 in the 100 butterfly. That time broke the Canadian National record. At the time, that stood as the 17th fastest time in the world this year. It now sits just outside the top 20. The old national record was a 52.28, and the swim was a personal best time by nearly a half second.

Condorelli was already headed to Rio in the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay after finishing second and first in the 50 and the 100, respectively. With no other Canadian man headed to Rio in the 100 butterfly, Conodrelli has been entered, giving him five events in his Olympic debut.
