Sarah Kohler Opens German Nationals With Worlds 4th Best 800 Free

The 2016 German nationals began today in Berlin. The meet is the first of two steps toward Olympic qualification for the German team.

In order to earn a trip to Rio, swimmers must meet qualification times in prelims and finals of this meet. The swimmer must then meet another, slightly slower, qualification time at a stop of the Mare Nostrum or at the German Open later this summer. Meeting the times, and finishing first or second this week, will earn an Olympic berth.

The fastest heat swam tonight, vying for the qualifying time of 8:33.33. Sarah Kohler was first to the wall in 8:22.80, well under the necessary time. That is also the fourth fastest time in the world this year, behind only Katie Ledecky, Jessica Ashwood, and Brittany MacLean. Kohler was also only three seconds from the National Record.
