Sharon van Rouwendaal Crowned Swimming Worlds Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year

Sharon van Rouwendaal of The Netherlands was crowned Swimming World’s Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year after her gold medal performance in the 10K marathon swim at the Rio Olympic Games.

Van Rouwendaal, now an experienced open water swimmer, did not always partake in swimming’s longest Olympic event, opting instead for the 100 and 200 back at the 2012 London Olympic Games. The Dutch backstroker wasted no time transitioning between pool swimming and open water swimming, participating in her first open water race in 2014.
