The first gold medal of the night went to a swimmer from lane eight. Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Balandin took home his nation’s first ever swimming medal when he topped the podium in the 200 breaststroke.

Cate Campbell of Australia started the night dropping her prelims 100 freestyle Olympic record again. Young Canadian Penny Oleksiak finished only .01 behind, lowering her own World Junior record.

Evgeny Rylov of Russia and Australia’s Mitch Larkin swam the fastest two times in semifinals of the men’s 200 backstroke.

On a half stroke into the finish, Mireia Belmonte of Spain beat Madeline Groves of Australia by only .03. That was Belmonte’s first Olympic gold.
