Swimming World Presents The Top 9 Olympic Upsets 4 Sandy NeilsonThe Last American

Who will shock the world of swimming in Rio? Is it someone we can anticipate if we take a deeper look in to the backstory of past upsets? The understanding and appreciation of an Olympic upset can enhance our enjoyment of tracking athletes in the years, months, and now days leading up to the 2016 Olympics.

Beginning with the November 2015 issue and running through July 2016–a month before the start of the Olympic swimming events in Rio on August 6–Swimming World Magazine will bring you its top 9 olympic upsets in the individual events in Olympic history–with an emphasis on the last 50 years.

At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Muinich, Germany a young Sandy Neilson walked out for the finals of the 100-Meter Freestyle and took her place behind lane three. Next to her in lanes four and five were two of the best finishers in the world: Shane Gould and Shirley Babashoff. Neilson powered ahead of Gould and Babshoff to win gold and become the last American to win the women’s 100 free at the Olympic Games.

To read more about Neilson’s story check out the April issue, available now!
