In a span of just nine days this past summer, Leah Hayes bettered the national age group record for 10-and-under girls six times in five events!
“Leah is a tremendously grounded young swimmer,†says her coach, Nancy Hooper. “Her attention to detail and her work ethic are outstanding. She will tell you she does not like to lose, but she is also the first one to go and console a fellow competitor who might be struggling.†In fact, Hayes will often give away her prizes from swim meets to fellow swimmers in an attempt to console them, rather than celebrate her victory.
At age 7, the young star was diagnosed with alopecia universalis, a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the hair fol- licles, thereby suppressing hair growth. While there is currently no standard treatment, the research is promising.
