The Olympic open water events that will take place off of Copacabana Beach feature several swimmers in each race capable of winning gold.
The 10-kilometer open water race was introduced to the Olympic lineup in 2008. Since then, the sport’s popularity has grown exponentially. And with popularity comes stiffer competition.
In fact, Catherine Vogt, head coach of Team USA’s Olympic open water team, believes that no fewer than six of the 10 ath- letes on both the women’s and men’s side who had qualified for the Olympics based on last summer’s World Championships re- sults could be in medal contention at Rio.
