Last year, Texas finally won its first 500 free title in program history. This year, the Longhorns defended that title with a win from Townley Haas at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.

With defending champion Clark Smith finishing a surprising 21st this morning, freshman Haas had to step up big to keep the title in Austin. Out under American record pace through the first half of the race, Haas settled for the sixth-fastest time ever as he moved to fifth all-time in the event’s history with a 4:09.00.

Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo, meanwhile, gave Haas all he could handle with a 4:09.98 for second.  That moved D’Arrigo up from 15th to ninth all time in the event’s history.
