Kyle Chalmers Slides Past 100 Free World Junior Record Mark at Tokyo World Cup

Kyle Chalmers, 18, of Australia continued to impress on the 2016 FINA World Cup stage with a top showing in finals of the men’s 100 free in Tokyo.

Chalmers topped the competition with a gold medal finish of 46.12, sliding past his existing World Junior mark of 46.61, set a mere four days ago. In the process, Chalmers over-turned Vladimir Morozov’s seven-meet reign over the 100 free.

Previous to that, the World Junior Record was a time of 47.20, however FINA had no name associated with the time. This is because when FINA began recognizing short course meter records in January of 2015 they simply set “benchmarks” for times. As those benchmark times are bypassed the record book begins to fill with names.

In addition to his World Junior record at the Singapore stop of the World Cup, Chalmers took home a gold medal in the 200 free (1:42.67).
