Sophomores and Juniors Propel Stanford Past University of the Pacific

By Sarah Lloyd, Swimming World College Intern

The No. 5 Stanford Cardinals took a commanding lead early on in their non-conference meet against the unranked University of the Pacific right from the get-go and did not relinquish the lead at all, winning 10 of the 14 events. The meet, which included some non-traditional events, ended with a score of 134-63 in Stanford’s favor. The win moved the Stanford men to a 3-0 record on the season.

Stanford started things off with a bang when a team of Ryan Arata, Christian Brown, Andrew Liang, and Sean Duggan posted a time of 3:19.43 in the 400 medley relay. Sophomore Patrick Conaton kept the momentum going afterwards, claiming the 800 yard freestyle (7:35.31), just touching out junior teammate Max Williamson (7:35.58). Williamson later won the 400 free (3:40.56).

In addition to his leg on the winning 400 medley relay, sophomore Liang was victorious in the 50 back (23.43) and the 150 back (1:19.39). He was Stanford’s only multi-individual event winner of the meet.
