Swimming World Presents Historic Surprises At US Olympic Trials Kim Blacks OneHundredth Of A Second

At the 1996 Olympic Trials, Kim Black missed qualifying for the semifinals of the women’s 50 free by 1-hundredth of a second. In 2000, the tables were turned in her favor. She was the 16th qualifier for the semifinals of the 200 free after three swimmers ahead of her had scratched the next race, and she was the final qualifier for finals. The next night, Kim placed sixth—by 1-hundredth of a second—to earn the final spot in the event for a trip to Sydney.There she won an Olympic gold medal in the 800 freestyle relay as a swimmer in prelims.
