Following his new American Record in the 100 back which upstaged his swim from last night, Cal’s Ryan Murphy talked with Swimming World‘s David Rieder about the race and his goals moving towards the 200 backstroke tomorrow. Murphy talked about how he did not set any short course goal times leading into this year, indicating his primary focus on long course. He also mentions how this meet will allow him to set himself up in the coming months in preparation for Trials this summer. He discusses his insane 20.20 split in the 200 medley relay tonight, and his former Bolles teammates, Caeleb Dressel and Joseph Schooling.

Earlier, Cal coach Dave Durden talked with Rieder about the Bear’s performance throughout the meet. He mentions Josh Prenot‘s win in the 400 IM, Murphy’s American Record and what has set him up for such a successful NCAAs, and the way that the team has handled the dual focus of preparation for Trials and NCAAs. He also talks strategy for the rest of the weekend and looks forward to Prenot’s 200 breaststroke.
