Mieko Nagaoka swam the 1500 short course meters at a meet in Matsuyama, Japan last Saturday. The 100 year old woman competed alone in the 100 to 104 year old age group, but finished the event doing backstroke in one hour and 15 minutes.
The centenarian is the first Japanese woman to complete this distance. She also holds the long course 1500 record.
Nagaoka began swimming when she was 82 as a therapy for her knees. Her passion for the sport has grown and she has gained international experience. She reports that her family members are also swimmers.
FINA recognizes Nagaoka as holding 24 different world records. This record will likely also be recognized by the Guinness World Records.
