Sun Yang put together a very impressive prelims swim of 3:43.55 in this morning’s 400 freestyle at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Santa Clara.

He squeaked under Peter Vanderkaay‘s meet record of 3:43.82 from 2008. That time is the second fastest in the world this year, and he came up only .02 shy of Larsen Jensen‘s 2008 U.S. Open record. Before today, Yang sat outside the world’s top 20 for the year.

Going head to head with Yang, Conor Dwyer earned the second seed in 3:48.15. David McKeon qualified third in 3:51.69, just ahead of Ryan Chochrane in 3:51.99.
